Few river landmarks carry a legend as well known as the Lorelei, a steep cliff rising above a narrow bend of the Rhine near St. Goarshausen. In the folk tale, popularized by Clemens Brentano's early nineteenth-century ballad, a woman seated on the rock sang so sweetly that boatmen steered onto the rocks below. This panoramic gelatin silver print, issued by Panora, Ltd., was copyright-deposited in the United States in April 1921, when long views of European river scenery were popular with travelers and armchair tourists. Its elongated format suits the subject, which shows the river channel narrowing between the hills.
