The title plays on the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, the touring company that performed for American audiences in the early 1940s, and sets that name against Adolf Hitler. Dated September 26, 1942, and probably published in the *Evening Star* of Washington, D.C., the drawing comments on the German offensive into Stalingrad, which began in late August and became a grinding urban battle through the autumn. Editorial cartoonists of the period often used wordplay like this to make distant wartime events familiar to readers at home, and this one turns a cultural reference into a political jab.
