Dated September 7, 1922, this night view shows buildings from the Centenary Exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, held to mark a century since Brazil declared independence from Portugal on that same date in 1822. Night exposures were difficult for photographers of the period, so the lit facades stand out as a record of how the city presented itself to visitors during the celebration. The print is credited to Bippus of Rio and belongs to a group of 1920s night photographs in the Library of Congress. Many of the exhibition's pavilions were built for this one event, so their illuminated outlines are worth a close look.
