This carte de visite pairs the two men on the Democratic ticket in 1868: Horatio Seymour for president and Francis Preston Blair Jr. for vice president. Seymour, a former New York governor, reluctantly accepted his party's nomination, while Blair, a Missouri politician who had once been an antislavery Republican, was chosen to balance the ticket. Cards like this were sold and traded during campaigns, carrying candidates' likenesses into homes far from the rallies. The ticket lost to Ulysses S. Grant, and the pairing now serves as a snapshot of an election fought largely over Reconstruction.
