Hong Kong's floating houses, the boat-dwellings of the harbor's Tanka and other boat-living communities, are the particular subject here, shown on a stereo card issued by the American Stereoscopic Company in New York around 1900. Stereocards like this were sold in sets and viewed through a hand stereoscope, so the scene was meant to look three-dimensional to a parlor audience thousands of miles away. Many such cards presented Asian port cities as exotic curiosities, and the houseboats, moored close together on the water, drew particular interest from Western viewers. The card was copyrighted by R.Y. Young, whose name appears in its record.
