Seen from the Thames, the Palace of Westminster shows its long riverside front and the tall clock tower that many visitors would have known from a boat on the river. The present building rose after a fire in 1834 destroyed much of the old medieval palace, with Charles Barry as architect and Augustus Pugin supplying much of the Gothic detail. By the 1890s, views like this were reproduced in photomechanical form and gathered into souvenir albums, such as the one this plate comes from, which paired the Parliament buildings with Westminster Abbey.
