Rather than a finished wall, this watercolor is a working design for a frieze of scrolling rinceaux and hanging festoons, with a winged herm-like figure and a central medallion. It faces a plate from Jean Le Pautre's *Oeuvres d'architecture*, published in 1751, which was pasted into an album of source material, and the male figure in that engraving appears to have shaped the figure drawn here. Constantino Brumidi, the Italian-born painter later known for his decorative work at the United States Capitol, used such albums to build his ornamental vocabulary, and this sheet shows how borrowed classical motifs were adapted into new decoration.
