Cooper's 1826 novel is set in 1757, during the French and Indian War, and its frontier scout Natty Bumppo, called Hawkeye, is the kind of figure this frontispiece is meant to evoke. The caption, taken from the story, describes a shadowy man emerging from the forest, a fitting image for a character whose skill at tracking and silent movement made him central to the tale. Illustrator E. Boyd Smith made this photogravure for Houghton, Mifflin and Company's 1899 edition, one of many turn-of-the-century printings that paired Cooper's romances with new pictures. The plate shows how illustrators of the period drew on the wilderness and frontier guide as an enduring symbol of early American adventure.
