Pocahontas throwing herself across the body of John Smith is the scene this engraving sets out to show, a moment that has been retold for centuries even though historians still debate whether it happened as described. The story comes from Smith's own writings about his captivity among the Powhatan people in Virginia around 1607, and it became one of the best-known episodes in English-language accounts of the colony. This London print, issued by George Virtue in the second half of the nineteenth century, reflects how Victorian audiences preferred to picture the encounter: a dramatic rescue staged for sentiment and empire as much as for historical record.
