Titled for a place called Smith's Villa, this view takes in the waterfront at Nice on the French Riviera, a city the record links to the 1890 to 1910 period. The print is one of several in an album that also covers Genoa, Pisa, Verona, and Vienna, so it was likely kept as a travel souvenir. By the late nineteenth century, Nice had become a fashionable winter resort for European and British visitors, drawn by its mild climate and seafront promenade. The vantage point, looking down toward the shore, is worth noticing for what it shows of that resort life.
