Taken in Wales in 1950, this group portrait shows coal miners from the Welsh coalfields, a region whose towns and livelihoods were built around pits and underground labor. W. Eugene Smith made the photograph during a period when the British coal industry had recently been nationalized, and his close attention to the men's faces and working clothes captures the strain and camaraderie of that work. This example is a 1977 print from a portfolio of ten of Smith's photographs issued by Witkin-Berley, so it reflects a later printing of an earlier image.
