A pen-and-ink drawing from 1977 by the Iranian satirist Ardeshir Mohassess, its title, "Shouting demonstrators pass through a shooting spree," sets up a grim irony: protesters chanting in the street move past scenes of violence. The work dates from the years when street demonstrations against the Shah were growing, leading up to the 1979 revolution. Mohassess used this kind of sharp, economical drawing to comment on political life in Iran, and the work was later reproduced in his book *Life in Iran* (1994).
