Seen from the Confederate bank of the Rappahannock, this drawing shows the pontoon bridges and rifle pits at U.S. Ford, the crossing the Union army used in the spring of 1863. Hooker's Army of the Potomac moved troops over the river there in late April, in advance of the fighting at Chancellorsville. The artist signed only with the initials ARW and worked in pencil and Chinese white on olive-toned paper. The note "somewhat misty" written above the scene suggests the far bank was seen through river haze. Field sketches like this one recorded crossings and terrain for those following the campaign.
