Soldiers of the Fifth Corps are shown bivouacked in the rifle pits, with cooking and camp life carried on in the trenches, in this pencil and Chinese white drawing on olive paper from July 1864. By that summer the Union Army of the Potomac had settled into siege lines around Petersburg, Virginia, where the fighting had turned from open maneuver to earthworks, sharpshooting and long waits. The small sheet is worth a close look for its record of how men lived in those trenches, eating, sleeping and keeping camp under constant threat.
