The German caption, "O. Chanutes Zweidecker im Fluge," names Octave Chanute's biplane glider in flight. Chanute, a Chicago railroad engineer and aviation writer, organized glider trials on the Lake Michigan dunes in Indiana in 1896, where his biplane and multiplane gliders made many short, controlled flights. This picture is a photograph of a printed reproduction, marked as Fig. 39, so it likely comes from a German-language book or periodical that illustrated early aviation history. Its record dates it between 1910 and 1947, well after Chanute's death in 1910, which suggests the reproduction was made to preserve his pioneering work.
