Here the magician Philippe appears under the billing "Chinese physicist," a stage persona that French conjurers of the 1830s sometimes used to suggest exotic learning and mystery. The lithograph was printed by the Paris firm of Imp. d'Aubert & Cie and published as an illustration in *Le Charivari* in 1839, the satirical Paris paper known for its caricatures of public figures and entertainers. Such portraits were a popular way to advertise performers and to comment, often with a sly edge, on the fashions of the stage. Viewed today, the print offers a window into how Parisian audiences were marketed magic and science as spectacle in the decade before photography became common.
