Iroquois was the son of Leamington, an imported stallion, and of the mare Maggie B.B., a daughter of Australian, and this print leads with that bloodline. Iroquois became a famous American racehorse when he won the Epsom Derby in 1881, the first American-bred horse to take that English classic. Currier & Ives, the New York firm, produced colored prints like this one for a broad public that followed horse racing, and the c1882 date places it just after that victory. The emphasis on pedigree reflects how much buyers of the day valued breeding as a sign of quality.
