Hopeful is identified here by pedigree: a horse sired by Godfrey's Patchen and out of a dam by the Bridham horse. For nineteenth-century audiences, a horse's bloodline carried real weight in breeding and harness racing, so the title would have signaled much to buyers of the day. This chromolithograph was published in New York around 1879 by Currier & Ives, and the artist's name, John Cameron, appears on the image itself. Currier & Ives sold color prints like this widely to a public that followed the trotting and breeding world closely, so the print offers a useful view of how popular horse sport was in the late 1870s.
