Thomas Worth's chromolithograph "Ready for the trot: bring up your horse!" shows the trotting-horse craze that gripped American sporting life in the 1870s, when harness racing on dirt tracks and private driveways drew crowds of wealthy owners and curious spectators. Published by Currier & Ives in New York around 1877, the print belongs to a long run of sporting and comic scenes that the firm produced for a broad middle-class market. Worth, a prolific caricaturist, often used such scenes to poke fun at the pretensions of gentlemen drivers and the excitement of the track, and the print's lively composition rewards a close look at its details.
