A humming trot" takes its name from the fast, even gait of a harness horse, in which diagonal legs move together, a pace that made trotters the stars of American racing in the 1890s. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that had built its business on popular lithographs since the 1830s, issued many sporting scenes of trotters and their drivers for a public eager to follow the sport. This example was produced as a chromolithograph, a process that layered several stones to build up its colors, and it is listed as number 3229 in the Gale Research catalog raisonné of the firm's prints. Its title captures the speed and sound that drew so many people to the trotting track.
