Minnehaha, the "Laughing Water" of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1855 poem *The Song of Hiawatha*, is the figure this hand-colored lithograph commemorates. In the poem she dies during a hard winter of famine, and her death devastates her husband, Hiawatha. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for mass-produced popular prints, issued many scenes from the poem during the 1860s, when Longfellow's work was widely read and its romanticized view of Native American life appealed to a broad audience. The print is a useful example of how a literary subject was turned into affordable, sentimental imagery for American homes.
