Caught in the pause between heats, the trotter in this hand-colored lithograph is a horse between races, when grooms would typically walk and cool it before its next run. Harness racing on oval tracks had become a major pastime across the United States by the 1870s, and the New York firm of Currier & Ives built a large business on sporting scenes like this one for buyers who followed the turf. Its 1875 date places it during the height of the trotting craze, when fans followed individual horses and their records closely.
