A parson's colt that hears a trotter approaching from behind and refuses to be held back is the joke at the center of this comic lithograph, and the title adds the pointed condition that it is Sunday. Thomas Worth, who signed the image, was one of the artists who drew humorous and sporting scenes for Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold such prints widely in the 1870s. Trotting races and harness horses were a popular pastime of the day, and the contrast between a clergyman's sober Sabbath and a horse eager to race was a familiar source of gentle satire. The print is hand-colored, a detail that gave these inexpensive lithographs their lively, saleable finish.
