Currier's lithograph "Fox Chase: The Death" shows the closing moment of a hunt, the instant when the hounds bring down the fox and the riders gather around the kill. Nathaniel Currier issued it in New York around 1846, during the years when his firm was turning out cheap hand-colored lithographs for a broad middle-class market. Fox hunting was then a popular sport in parts of the Northeast and the South, and prints like this one gave people who never rode to hounds a lively look at the field, the dogs, and the traditional ending of the chase.
