A hand-colored lithograph titled "The mother's blessing," issued by the New York firm Currier & Ives, gives us a sentimental domestic scene of the kind the firm sold in large numbers during the later nineteenth century. The print is signed by the artist O. Starck, whose name appears on the image itself, and it is catalogued in the Gale Research raisonné of Currier & Ives work (no. 4598). Currier & Ives produced prints aimed at middle-class American households, often showing family life, religion and rural or sentimental themes, and hand-coloring was applied to many impressions to make them more appealing. Its date is given only as a span between 1856 and 1907, so the exact year of issue is uncertain.
