Few images in Edward S. Curtis's vast body of work are as tender as this one, a c1907 portrait of a Chemehuevi mother and child. The Chemehuevi are closely related to the Southern Paiute and traditionally lived along the Colorado River and in the surrounding deserts of present-day California and Arizona. Curtis made portraits like this as part of his long effort to document Native American life, a project he carried on for decades with financial backing from J. P. Morgan. The catalog number and copyright registration attached to the photograph show how carefully Curtis tracked each image, though the sitters' names are not recorded here.
