Within weeks of his solo flight to Paris in May 1927, Charles Lindbergh posed in Washington with his mother, Evangeline, and President and Mrs. Coolidge. The photograph is dated June 12, 1927, a day after the president presented the aviator with the Distinguished Flying Cross. Lindbergh's nonstop crossing had made him an international celebrity, and the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented public life in the capital, recorded many such official occasions. The picture is notable for placing the young flyer's mother beside the country's highest officials.
