Charles and Anne Lindbergh are shown on the witness stand in a Flemington, New Jersey, courtroom, where they testified during the trial of Bruno Richard Hauptmann. The case grew out of the 1932 kidnapping and killing of the Lindberghs' infant son, a crime that drew intense national attention and helped prompt a federal law against kidnapping across state lines. The photograph was made by a staff photographer for the New York World-Telegram, which covered the proceedings closely, and it shows a family forced to relive a private loss before a crowded public courtroom.
