Here William McKinley addresses a large crowd at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., during his inauguration as the 25th president on March 4, 1897. The picture is a stereograph, one of a pair of nearly identical photographs meant to be viewed through a stereoscope for a three-dimensional effect that was hugely popular in American homes at the time. Published by J.F. Jarvis and sold by Underwood & Underwood, a firm known for mass-producing stereoscopic views, it shows how inaugurations drew dense crowds to the Capitol grounds.
