A young girl, Miss Tarkington, daughter of Mrs. W. Tarkington Jr., sits on the steps of the White House in this June 1922 photograph, waiting to take a picture of President Warren G. Harding. The scene reverses the usual expectation: the child is the one with a camera, patiently holding her place for a moment she has come to capture. The print comes from the National Photo Company's Washington files, a commercial studio that recorded visitors and officials in the early 1920s. Its handwritten caption preserves the playful detail that sets it apart from more formal presidential portraits of the period.
