This photograph shows a president's desk in the executive offices at the White House, a working space that the record places sometime between 1909 and 1932. The executive offices moved into a dedicated wing in 1902, and they were enlarged in 1909, so the room would have been a busy center of presidential business during those years. The National Photo Company, which produced many commercial views of Washington landmarks in the early twentieth century, made this print, and its architectural and interior views are valued today as records of how government workspaces looked before later renovations.
