The woman in this 1926 photograph is Winnaretta Singer, the American-born Princesse de Polignac, who married into the French noble family and became a well-known Paris salon hostess. Her fortune came from the Singer sewing machine company, and she spent much of it supporting composers, including Igor Stravinsky, Maurice Ravel and Francis Poulenc. The National Photo Company, a Washington press photography firm, recorded her calling on the president, a visit that drew attention to a woman who linked American wealth with French aristocratic society.
