Titled *The magic lake*, this hand-colored lithograph names a fanciful scene rather than a documented place or event, so its interest lies in the title and the color work that brings it to life. New York publisher Currier & Ives issued it, and the firm sold inexpensive pictures of landscapes, sporting scenes and domestic life to a broad American public from the 1830s into the early 1900s. Hand coloring, usually done by teams of workers applying color through stencils, separates these prints from plain black-and-white lithographs. The imprint dates the print only to a span between 1856 and 1907.
