Frances F. Palmer drew this hand-colored lithograph for Currier & Ives, the New York firm that turned landscapes, farm scenes and rural life into affordable prints for a broad middle-class market. Palmer was the firm's most prolific in-house designer for many years, and her pastoral subjects helped define the company's image of American countryside as peaceful, orderly and productive. The print is catalogued in the firm's raisonné, a reference that helps researchers trace the many editions and variants Currier & Ives issued.
