Susan Barton, billed here as "the mammoth lady," was a woman whose great size made her a popular attraction in the 1840s, when traveling shows and museum exhibitions drew crowds with human oddities. Nathaniel Currier, who ran a busy New York lithography firm, issued this hand-colored print around 1849 to advertise her appearance and to capitalize on public curiosity. Prints like this one were cheap, widely circulated, and often colored by hand, so they survive in quantity and offer a window into the popular entertainment and promotional culture of the period.
