Few women at the Jacobean court stood as close to the throne as Lady Arabella Stuart, whose likeness survives here as a reproduction of an original painting. A cousin of King James I, she held a claim to the English crown that made her a political concern, and the king kept her under close watch for much of her adult life. Her secret marriage to William Seymour in 1610, made without royal permission, led to her confinement, and she died in the Tower of London in 1615. The print offers a sense of how she chose to be seen during those years.
