Emma Hamilton appears here in the guise of "Nature," an allegorical role that George Romney gave her in several of his portraits of the 1780s and 1790s. Romney, one of the leading British portrait painters of his day, drew on Hamilton's looks and bearing so often that she became his most painted model, and these canvases helped carry her image well beyond London. This 1930s print reproduces one of those paintings, and the record also lists dogs among its subjects, a reminder that Romney's classical poses often included animals as symbols of the natural world.
