A single fashionable woman appears here in both dress and undress, a pairing that let caricaturists poke fun at the gap between public display and private habit. Robert Dighton, an English printmaker known for portraits and caricatures, issued this color etching in 1807, when light, high-waisted muslin gowns drew frequent mockery in London print shops. The contrast invites close looking at the clothing itself, and the print was later included in a 1984-85 exhibition of English caricature.
