Wilson's "great-footed hawk" is the rough-legged hawk, a bird of the far northern tundra that spends its winters across much of the northern United States. The name refers to the feathered legs and large feet that set it apart from other hawks. The plate was drawn by Alexander Wilson and engraved by Alexander Lawson, a Scottish-born engraver who worked with him in Philadelphia. It appeared in *American Ornithology*, published by Bradford and Inskeep between 1808 and 1814, which is widely regarded as the first comprehensive survey of North American birds.
