Few views of 1820s Philadelphia charity buildings survive in this kind of detail. George Strickland drew the building and J.W. Steel engraved it, and C.G. Childs published the result in 1827. The city's benevolent societies were then building homes to shelter widows and children left without a breadwinner, and engravings like this one helped make such institutions visible to donors and the public. Notice the symmetrical facade and orderly layout, which reflect the restrained architectural style favored for public buildings of the period.
