Sculptor Bessie Potter Vonnoh, born in 1872, appears here in her own studio, a setting that distinguished her portrait from the society sitters who filled many periodicals of the day. The picture ran in *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on December 9, 1897, on page 373, as a halftone, a fairly new process that let publishers print photographs alongside text instead of relying on hand-engraved drawings. Vonnoh was in her mid-twenties then, an emerging sculptor at a time when few women worked professionally in that field.
