Agatha Christie appears here with her first husband, Archibald Christie, in a portrait that predates her fame as a novelist. The picture was taken in 1919, when the couple had been married about five years, and Archibald, a former Royal Flying Corps officer, was adjusting to life after the First World War. Agatha had not yet published the novel that launched her career, *The Mysterious Affair at Styles*, which appeared in 1920. The print itself was made around 1977, about a year after her death, so it reflects later interest in her life as much as the moment it was taken.
