Its caption is what sets this print apart: a furious "Irish peg" demands that a dog make good some damage, or else she will "cut away your parsnip." The threat is crude and comic, and the wording alone suggests a quarrel between a street seller and a fashionable man. Carington Bowles, a leading London publisher of satirical prints, issued it in 1773, when the British press was filled with caricatures of the dandies known as macaronis. The record also lists peddlers as a subject, so the print likely mocks the clash between fine clothes and working street life in the city.
