A group of Union officers from the Provost Marshal's office of the Third Army Corps, photographed at Culpeper, Virginia, in March 1864. The provost marshal enforced discipline, policed the camps, and handled prisoners and passes, so the men in this group worked in the day-to-day order of the army rather than in the battle lines. Culpeper was a major Union base during the winter of 1863 to 1864, and the army's presence there shaped the town for months before the Overland Campaign began in May 1864.
