A marksman with an odd bulge on his rifle is the joke at the center of this caricature, and the bulge is what sets it apart from the other sharpshooter scenes in the series. Currier & Ives published it in New York around 1882 as part of the Darktown comics, and the signature on the image identifies Thomas Worth as the artist. Worth was a prominent caricaturist of the period, and these comic lithographs portrayed Black Americans through exaggerated, demeaning stereotypes common in popular entertainment of the day. Today viewers often read them as much for what they reveal about Gilded Age racial attitudes as for their humor.
