Few places at Gettysburg saw fiercer fighting than Little Round Top, the rocky hill on the southern end of the Union line that this painting shows under attack by the 5th Corps, commanded by General George Sykes. Sykes's men reached the hill on the afternoon of July 2, 1863, in time to help hold its slopes against Confederate assaults that threatened to roll up the Union flank. Painted in the decades after the war, the work reflects how Gettysburg had become a central touchstone of national memory, and the boulder-strewn terrain it depicts explains why the fighting was so desperate.
