Few nineteenth-century prints tie a national personification so directly to a single anniversary as this Currier & Ives lithograph does. Its central figure is Brother Jonathan, the homespun symbol of the American people that the firm's artists returned to often, and the sheet is linked to the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876, held to mark a hundred years since independence. The title, *The Stride of a Century*, suggests a nation covering a hundred years in one long step, a boast typical of the centennial year. Currier & Ives sold such sheets cheaply to a broad public, so the print also shows how popular lithography carried national pride into ordinary homes.
