John Brown, the abolitionist who led the 1859 raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, is the subject of this portrait, which was issued decades after his death. The print is a photomechanical reproduction from about 1899, a process that let publishers turn photographs into inexpensive plates for books and magazines, and it reproduces a portrait type from the 1850s. Its copyright notice names Small, Maynard, & Company, a Boston publisher of the period. Brown was hanged for treason in December 1859, and by the late 1890s his image had become a symbol in debates over slavery and the Civil War.
