A ragged boy takes his ease with a pipe or cigar in this chromolithograph titled "Draws easy," a phrase about a smoke that pulls well. The picture is by John George Brown, a British-born painter who made his name in New York with sympathetic genre scenes of street boys and working-class children. Bencke & Scott made the color printing, and J. Snedecor published it in New York in 1874. Chromolithography built up color from several stone impressions, which let publishers sell affordable reproductions of popular paintings to households that could not buy the originals.
