Captain George John Brown of the 4th Light Dragoons stands in his winter dress beside his servant, and the presence of the servant gives this portrait a domestic, almost casual quality. Roger Fenton made it in 1855 during his stay in the Crimea, when British forces were besieging Sevastopol through a harsh winter. Fenton's salted paper prints are among the earliest photographs taken of a military campaign, and this one shows his interest in officers and the men who attended them as well as in the war itself.
